Dynamic Movers NYC is filled to the brim with experience handling proper loading in moving trucks on a daily basis. In the years of our existence, we have moved so many happy customers that we feel like giving back to the community with several tips. So that is exactly why we wrote this article for you. Enjoy!

The number one tip for loading a moving truck – size

The number one mistake we see when people decide to move on their own is hiring a rental truck that is too small. Understandably so, since it is cheaper. However, what they do not take into account is that they will have to take several trips back and forth and the manpower, time, and gas alone don’t make it worth it. It’s simply not economical. So what we recommend is that you make an informed decision on what size you need your rental truck to be. The best way to go about this is to ask the rental company directly. As they can provide you with personalized information depending on your needs. In other words, you can say exactly what you want to transport and they can make a recommendation on how big of a truck you need to rent.

Make sure to pick a proper sized truck.

Inquire about the size on the Internet!

Also, keep in mind that most NYC movers and packers have information about the sizes of their trucks on their website. So make sure to check that out as well!

Gather all the equipment

When packing and loading the moving truck you want to keep one thing in mind. You want to have everything ready before you start. You don’t want to begin the loading process and halfway remember that you need a moving dolly for your refrigerator. So, in order to combat that, we recommend that you gather all the necessary equipment beforehand. Things to make sure you have:

  • moving dollies
  • blankets
  • moving pads

These are probably the most important things you will need. So, don’t forget to prepare them before you start moving.

Disassemble everything that’s possible when loading a moving truck

Another question we get asked a lot is how do you guys make everything fit in so perfectly? Well, to be honest with you, it’s quite simple. We just disassemble everything that can be disassembled. We make sure that things that are bulky are separated in smaller digestible pieces. The stuff that cannot be disassembled we make sure it gets through the door. How do we do that? Well, if we cannot make a thing go through the door, we make the door go through the thing. In other words, we take down the door and make just enough room for that bulky item to move through. So, the next time you decide to move, make sure that you disassemble everything that can be separated into smaller pieces. This way you can move everything more efficiently.

Loading a moving truck – strategy

Put the heaviest items first. Right so, have you ever heard of that famous scene where the professor tries to explain the Pareto principle to the class?  Just in case you haven’t let us give you the gist of it.

The Pareto principle – explained.

The professor explains to the class that the key to a happy life is doing the biggest and hardest things first. As a way of showing us this, he presents the class with an empty mason jar. He fills that mason jar with big rocks and asks the class is the jar full. Of course, the class says it is. He then proceeds to fill the jar with smaller rocks. Is it full now? The class says it is. Then he places in the pebbles, and after that the gravel. To the amazement of the class each and every time they keep saying the jar is full. Lastly, he takes a glass of water and pours it into the jar. Asking the class one more time if the glass is full. All that, without spilling anything from the mason jar.

Load the bulkiest items first

The idea behind this story is quite simple. If you put the time and effort into the big and hard things in life you will always have time for the little things. However, vice versa it is not possible. You cannot put the big rocks before the water and gravel and sand. It has to go in that order if you want it to fit. So with that in mind, that’s exactly the principle we are going to use while loading the truck. We are going to make sure that the heaviest, most bulkiest items are loaded in first, and then we are going to load the boxes, and then everything else. This way we are making sure there is room for every item you planned on packing.

Protect your items

Just make sure to fill in the space in between with blankets when you are loading in those items. You don’t want your boxes jiggling and shimming around. So make sure everything is bolted in to place. Since this is the best way to protect your furniture when moving. Nobody wants their items destroyed when moving. So keep that in mind. The next time you decide to load a moving truck, make sure there is no space for the boxes and other items to move in during transportation, as they could swirl around and damage your items.
